Purchasing a skateboard can be a very expensive investment, especially if you are purchasing a top-of-the-line quality skateboard. Before rushing out to buy that skateboard of your dreams, you may want to consider the benefits of building your own.

It is likely that once you start looking in to building your own board, you will find that the profit margin on pre-made skateboards is unbelievably high and it is much cheaper to build a custom skateboard from scratch than to buy one already built. It is amazing how little it costs to make your own skateboard if you know where to buy your parts.

It is not uncommon for a customer to pay top price to have their skateboard built to their specific needs, especially if the customer spends a lot of time on a skateboard. However, the same skateboard can be built for much less if the customer buys all of the custom parts and builds the skateboard themselves.

Since skateboards are manufactured to meet the needs of the majority of skateboarders, there are times when there is not a standard model available that truly fits the skateboarder’s needs. Therefore, building your own skateboard may be the only way to accomplish getting the features you need at an affordable cost.

By building your own skateboard, you have the control to put every feature you want on your board so that it is exactly the way you want it. You can purchase a deck that will be the perfect fit for your size, the type and size of wheels that make your skateboard comfortable and maneuver the way you want it, and add all of the little details that truly make the skateboard your own creation. By customizing your skateboard as much as possible, you will have built a skateboard that you will get plenty of enjoyment from.

Unfortunately, many skateboarders don’t realize how much cheaper it is to build their own skateboard and they end up purchasing cheaply made skateboards because they do not have the money to invest in a good one. Sadly, this decision usually ends up in the customer being unhappy with a board that probably isn’t going to last very long. A much better option would be to use that same money and buy the materials you need to build your own. Not only will you get a better return on your investment, but you will have a much better product. You also get the priceless feeling of knowing that you built your board by hand.

More experienced skateboarders have spent enough time on their skateboards to know exactly what they do and do not like on a board. When building your own, you have more control over the features can add and delete to your skateboard. Not only does this give you a better skateboard, it will often help with your ability to perform tricks and stunts.

By building your own skateboard, you can bypass the frustration of having limitations on what you can and cannot do on your skateboard. You will be more likely to use your skateboard more often, and it will be easier to hone your craft. Since it is easier and cheaper than most might think to build your own board, this option is definitely worth checking out!

Cra$h asked:

I live in Boston, and it can get pretty snowy there. I’ve heard that the cold weather can sometimes damage skateboards left in the garage… So I was just wondering– would it be a good idea to store them inside for the winter season?

I am not looking for a super nice one, just a basic complete skateboard. It will be for my husband, and I know nothing about skateboards! I would ideally like to buy online.

When skateboarders are practicing new tricks, it would be safe to assume that they would not consider using a new skateboard to do the tricks. One would assume that they would use an old skateboard that has plenty of pings and dings in it that were caused by many spills and thrills. Those assumptions would be dead wrong. Most skateboarders prefer to use new skateboards or one less than a few months old.

The equipment that skaters prefer to start out with is most often a balance trainer. There are several branded models of balance trainers out there, and they come in various colors and sizes. A skateboarder must develop a sense of balance while standing on a skateboard and will not be able to complete any tricks until the skateboarder is completely comfortable and sure of how to handle the skateboard.

Balance trainers are skateboards that are equipped with a roller. They let the skateboarder get the feel of skating in conditions that mimic those that a surfer might encounter in the ocean. They also imitate the movements that a surfer might do when they are skimming the waves at the shoreline. Surfers will most often develop a sense of balance by using skimmers and wakeboards in shallow waters.

A balance trainer is easy to recognize because it is a skateboard that features tips that are turned up at each end. Some models have been equipped with safety features that many advanced skateboarders would find inconvenient. There are many athletic sports that could benefit from the balance training that is derived from this piece of equipment, and people find that it is easy to stash the balance trainers away while traveling because they are not big and bulky but are longer than regular skateboards.

When a skateboard wants to train to perform tricks such as kickflips and ollies, they need equipment that is not going to lock up or roll. Many skateboards come with various blocks that can be attached to the side of any skateboard and they will allow a skateboarder to perform tricks with fewer worries. Most skateboarders need equipment that will allow them to train continuously throughout the year and there is skateboarding equipment that is suitable for all weather conditions.

Most skateboarding equipment that is used for training must be able to withstand a lot of abuse because a new skateboarder is sure to make many mistakes before they refine their skills. Skateboard manufacturers realize this and have manufactured many training devices that are low cost which makes them easy to replace. Some skateboards will need to be refurbished with a new deck made from rubber after only a few months of training.

There are many replacement parts available for skateboards and the rollers are one of the first items that skateboarders will choose to replace. Many skateboarding wheels will become chunky after a few weeks because the skateboarder has been using it on a street and the contact with concrete and rock has taken its toil and made the skateboard unserviceable until new rollers are attached. Rollers come in a variety of colors and can be easily replaced in a matter of minutes.

If you are interested in skateboarding, you are eventually going to have to buy a skateboard. It is usually a good idea to talk to people you know who already skateboard to see what they like and do not like about certain brands. Chances are you will be given the opportunity to try out your friends’ skateboards if you ask them. This will give you a good idea as to what your own personal preferences are for skateboards.

The board part of the skateboard is called the deck and it is usually made of plywood. You can also find cheaper skateboards that are made of plastic. Plastic skateboards are all right to start out with, but if you really love skateboarding you will want to buy a wooden, fiberglass or carbon board as these will last longer, however they will cost you more too. The average skateboard is eight inches wide, but you can get wider boards that make it easier to learn how to skateboard. The wider the board, the more stable it becomes. However wider boards make skateboard tricks more difficult. If you want to be able to rotate a board, you will want one that is 8 inches wide or less.

Your skateboard should come with a sandpaper-like material glued to the surface of the board. This is called griptape, and its entire purpose is to help your shoes grip onto the board as you skate. You will be able to buy the griptape from the skateboard shop that you buy your skateboard from. It comes in various sizes and can be cut down to the correct size for your board. Your griptape needs to be replaced periodically as it wears off the more that you use the skateboard.

Most skateboards have raised nose tail and sides, which is called the concave. The deeper the concave is, the more dramatic tricks can be achieved by the skater. If you are an aggressive skater, you will want a deeper concave. Beginning skaters will need a shallow concave until they really learn how to skate and then can move on to a board with a deeper concave.

The wheels on your skateboard are made of hard plastic, though you can still find old models that have metal wheels, however the metal is not recommended. The plastic wheels are made in different sizes and hardness. The most common level of hardness is one that is 90a. The harder the wheel is, the more pop you can get out of them. Pro skateboarders use wheels with 100a hardness. 97a hardness is good for ramp riding and skateboard parks. The smaller the wheels are in diameter the easier it is for you to perform some skateboard tricks. Smaller wheels will put your skateboard lower to the ground, but when you are starting out you want to have the larger wheels.

Do not get stuck on name brands! You can buy blank boards that have no brand names on them at all. It does not mean that they are bad boards, in fact, many skaters prefer the blank boards to the name brands. You can then customize the skateboard anyway that you would like to and the price is much less than you would pay for a brand name board.

Skateboards, especially customized ones, can be very expensive. Have you thought about building your own? Think how proud you would be of your skateboard knowing you made it yourself. By building your own skateboard, you can get everything you want on it and not have to settle for a board that only has some of the features you wanted.

The deck is the first part of the skateboard for you to think about. The size of the deck is important and depends on your physical size and what you want the skateboard to be able to do. If you are smaller, you can usually use a deck that is less wide than if you are a bigger person. Make sure you select a deck size that will comfortably fit your feet. Depending on the kind of skating you are going to be doing, the deck should be smaller (for more tricks and stunts) or larger (for less complicated moves).

You can customize your skateboard deck any way you want including paint and decals. You can paint the deck all one color or you could use stencils to add some details. Also, think about adding stick-on decals to make your board unique. Once your board is painted and decals have been applied, the next step is to apply a clear coat of paint to protect the board’s surface and prevent it from damage.

You can choose from any number of wheels, the types and sizes are nearly unlimited. Wheels also come in any color you can imagine. It’s important to find wheels with the right hardness, or durometer. Most skateboard wheels have a hardness or duromter of 99a. The average diameter of skateboard wheels is between 52mm and 55mm. Depending on how unique you want your skateboard to be, though, you may want to go with something different.

Wheel size will affect your skateboard’s speed and your ability to do tricks and stunts. If you are looking for speed, you’ll want to go with larger wheels. However, if you are more interested in doing stunts and tricks, smaller wheels will work better for that purpose. Consider what surfaces you will be skating on as well. You want wheels that will work on a variety of surfaces and terrains.

Bearings are what you will use to hold the wheels in place on the board. Bearings are important so make sure you get good quality bearings that will last a long time. You’ll want to do some research into the different grades of bearings to see what would work best for you. Bearing grades are odd numbers ranging from 1 to 9 with the most common grades being a 3 or 5.

You’ll have to find the best placement for the trucks, the axle system, on the bottom of the skateboard. The width of the trucks varies so make sure you find some that will work with your board. Also, consider the height of the trucks carefully because this will affect your ability to do tricks and stunts. The lower the trucks and the smaller the wheels, the better you can be at flips and tricks. If you decide higher trucks are for you, you’ll need to use bigger wheels.

Building a skateboard is something that almost anyone can do. Make sure you don’t use cheap parts on your skateboard or you won’t be happy with the results. Make sure you have everything together correctly as well so your board will operate correctly and be safe. You can find detailed instructions online in written form or in videos that will help you build your skateboard. You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t need fancy tools to build your own skateboard.
